History

The Stockroom at 230 resides in a four-story Classical Revival structure coined the Carolina Trust Building. Constructed in 1902, the simple yet exquisite design is architecturally and culturally significant, as it reflects the height of commercial building design at the turn of the century in Raleigh's downtown business district.

At its onset, the Carolina Trust Building was home to a myriad of banks and professional services including doctors, tailors, and insurers. McLellan’s Dime Store purchased the building in 1920 and grew to be an influential retail presence in Raleigh for decades. The primary retail area and luncheonette were located on the 1st floor while the upper floors served as stockrooms. Integrating the space’s historical functionality in the name and restoring its original structure were essential to the authenticity of the venue.

Over a century later, this landmark building continues to weave itself into the cherished memories of the community through its variety of events and special gatherings, and by providing office space for local business to call home.
